Henry Day Jr., son of Henry Day Sr. and Hannah Graham Day was born near Russellville, Ky., in 1816. His father died in 1821 in Ky. In 1828, at the age of 12 years, he came with his widowed mother and some of her younger children to Scott County settling southeast of Alsey and probably lived at or near the property now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Rogers Jefferson and family. Rogers is a fourth generation descendent. In August of 1834, Henry Jr. married Sarah McPherson, daughter of William McPherson. This family had also settled southeast of Alsey when they came by ox drawn wagon from Kentucky in 1826. Sarah and Henry started house-keeping with fifty dollars which was borrowed at 25 percent interest and paid back by splitting rails. They were thrifty people so that in their lifetime they were able to acquire a farm for themselves and land for each of their children some of which is yet owned by descendents. The strong and abiding religious faith of this pioneer couple was passed on to their descendents through predominantly Baptist families who have been active in Pleasant Hill, Alsey, Glasgow, and Winchester Churches. Among the descendents known to be living in the county 143 years after their marriage are: Mrs. Daisy McGlasson, Mrs. Grace Savage, Mrs. Loye Guianne, Lonnie Day, Abner Day, Harold Day, Claude Day, Albert Day, Elmer Day, Chester Day, Mrs. James Jefferson, Mrs. Robert Barnett, Mrs. Mae Mirus, Elmer Sipes, Larry Sipes, Harry Taylor, Basil Taylor, Darrell Day, Gerald Day, Mrs. Dorothy Cox, Glenn Day, Mrs. Doris Fearneyhough, Mrs. Rita Johnson. Parts of this article were written using the book "The Scott County Bicentenniel Book" published by the Bluff Times and the Winchester Times in 1976 and is used with their permission. |
